Jakarta Stroke Hospitals: Expanding Access to Critical Care

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Jakarta Races to Expand Stroke⁢ Care Capacity, Aiming for 27 “Stroke Ready” hospitals

Jakarta, Indonesia The Jakarta Provincial Government is working to bolster⁤ stroke care infrastructure, ⁢aiming to establish 27 Stroke Ready Hospitals (SRH) across the city to combat the leading cause of death and disability.‌ Currently, Jakarta has 23 hospitals designated as SRH, primarily operated by ⁣private institutions, according to Ani Ruspitawati, Head‌ of ⁤the Jakarta Health Office.

An⁢ SRH is defined as a healthcare ⁢facility equipped with specialized stroke protocols, trained medical personnel, necessary equipment, and ‌rapid-response systems. Ruspitawati highlighted the importance of accelerating⁣ the development of these facilities during ‍Thursday’s 61st Jakarta Provincial National Health day commemoration, themed “Smart City, Healthy people.”

“We must accelerate the development of SRH facilities to address current public health challenges,” she stated.

Tarakan Regional General Hospital in Central Jakarta currently leads ⁣the way, having achieved international recognition with ‍the WSO Angels‍ Award for its commitment to high-quality ⁤stroke‍ care. Though, Ruspitawati noted that not all‌ of the remaining 22 SRH-designated⁢ hospitals have yet met the same global benchmarks. the WSO angels Award specifically acknowledges hospitals⁢ demonstrating excellence in stroke treatment.

The push for increased SRH capacity comes as stroke remains a notable public health concern. Globally, at least seven⁣ million people die from stroke annually. A 2023 Indonesia Health Survey revealed ‍a national stroke prevalence rate of 8.3 percent. Within Jakarta’s population of over 11.7 million, the same survey recorded 24,981 doctor-diagnosed stroke cases.

Alongside ⁣expanding hospital capabilities, the government is promoting the Community Movement for Healthy Lifestyle (Germas), emphasizing seven key steps: regular physical⁢ activity, a diet rich in fruits and‌ vegetables, abstaining from smoking and alcohol, regular health checks, maintaining environmental cleanliness, and ensuring proper toilet hygiene.
