IUCN Africa Pavilion Set to Drive Conservation Leadership at 2025 World Conservation Congress
MARRAKECH, MOROCCO – The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is preparing to launch a dedicated Africa Pavilion at the World Conservation Congress (WCC) 2025 in Marrakech, Morocco. The pavilion will serve as a central hub for African conservation leadership, fostering collaboration and amplifying the continent’s voice on the global stage.
The Africa Pavilion will focus on five thematic priorities: celebrating conservation successes and innovation across Africa; promoting inclusive, community-led conservation efforts; exploring innovative funding models for conservation through a dedicated “Freshwater, nbs and Finance Day”; highlighting the importance of oceans, rivers, coasts, and wetlands with an “Ocean Day”; and addressing region-specific priorities in readiness for the Members’ Assembly through a “Members’ day” led by regional and national committees.
Activities will include launching key African and subregional collaborations, hosting Member events and action planning sessions, and facilitating networking and working meetings. The pavilion aims to co-develop inclusive roadmaps with Members, Indigenous Peoples & Local Communities (IP&LCs), governments, the private sector, and funding partners, addressing current and foreseen conservation challenges.
Led by the IUCN Secretariats in West and Central Africa (PACO),the Mediterranean (MED),and Eastern and Southern Africa (ESARO),the pavilion’s institution will involve IUCN Members, commissions, and Councillors for Africa. The IUCN Secretariat will also seek partnerships with key State Members, regional bodies, and the African Union (AU) to ensure strong leadership engagement.
