The 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, celebrating LGBTQ+ representation in media, will commence streaming on Hulu Saturday, March 21, following a ceremony held March 5 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The event, hosted by actor Jonathan Bennett, featured performances by Demi Lovato and rising pop artist Eli.
A surprise appearance by Liza Minnelli marked a highlight of the evening, as she received the inaugural Liza Minnelli Storyteller Award. The award recognized Minnelli’s recently released memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!, which has already garnered attention for excerpts featuring Lady Gaga. Minnelli, accepting the award, stated, “I’m so glad to be with you, all of you. You produce me so proud ’cause you’re strong and you stand up for what you believe in.”
Several individuals and series were honored for their contributions to LGBTQ+ representation. Quinta Brunson, the Golden Globe-winning creator and star of Abbott Elementary, received the Vanguard Award. Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, co-hosts of the podcast Las Culturistas, were presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. Heated Rivalry was recognized as outstanding new TV series, with director Jacob Tierney and cast members Connor Storrie, François Arnaud, and Robbie G.K. Accepting the award. The Traitors took home the award for outstanding reality competition program, accepted by contestants Chrishell Stause, Parvati Shallow, and Monet X Change.
In the music categories, Young Miko was named outstanding music artist, surpassing nominees including Lady Gaga and Elton John. KATSEYE received the award for outstanding breakthrough music artist. Demi Lovato opened the present with a performance of “Kiss,” a track from her album It’s Not That Deep, which reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Hulu subscriptions range from $11.99 per month (or $119.99 annually) for a plan with ads to $18.99 per month (or $227.88 annually) for ad-free viewing. A bundled subscription with Disney+ is currently available for $4.99 for the first three months to new and returning subscribers.
