Greyson Chance Reconnects with Fans on China Tour, Reflects on Career Journey
BEIJING – US singer-songwriter Greyson Chance recently concluded a China tour, marked by a deliberate effort to connect with his fanbase and a period of personal reflection on his career. Performances in cities including Beijing on October 15 featured Mandarin subtitles during spoken segments and on-screen prompts for audience participation, demonstrating a commitment to bridging cultural gaps.
The tour represents a meaningful moment for Chance, who rose to prominence in 2010 at age 12 with a viral performance of Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi at his Oklahoma middle school. He described the tour as “a symbol of rebirth,” and a chance to reconcile with his past while embracing the future.
Chance emphasized the importance of fan interaction, notably through nightly meet-and-greets where he received letters detailing personal stories and expressions of support. ”I think we all connect through a shared experience of pressure and expectations – whether it’s from family, school or work. My songs have always been a release, a way for us to process those pressures together,” he said.
Acknowledging the challenges of early fame, Chance spoke candidly about the pressures he faced as a young artist. “The worst part of becoming a star at such a young age was the immense pressure – personally and professionally,” he admitted. However, he also highlighted the rewarding aspect of his career: “The best part is knowing that my music is impacting people’s lives. It’s unbelievable to think that something I created is helping someone in their daily life.”
Looking ahead, Chance expressed a shift in viewpoint, moving away from ambitious goals toward a focus on artistic authenticity. “I don’t have concrete goals anymore,” he stated. “My goal is to look back at my discography and say, ‘You did that on your own terms.’ That’s the artist I want to be. I don’t need to chase trends – I just want to create music that feels authentic to me.” His songwriting process, he described, remains fluid and spontaneous.
