Raphaël Glucksmann, co-president of Place Publique, voiced his support for Patrick Mardikian, a candidate in the Angoulême municipal elections, via a Facebook video on Thursday. Glucksmann stated his belief in Mardikian’s team, describing them as representing a left-leaning perspective aligned with the concerns of local residents and asserting that Angoulême “deserves a recent impetus.”
The endorsement comes amidst internal tensions within Place Publique, as Glucksmann recently suspended 19 candidates affiliated with the party who had chosen to form alliances with La France Insoumise (LFI). This action, reported as a precursor to potential exclusion, underscores a growing rift between Glucksmann’s faction and the more hardline left represented by LFI.
Manuel Bompard, a figure within LFI, also utilized Facebook to express his backing for Anne-Aziliz Petit-Louboutin in the Angoulême mayoral race. Bompard’s statement framed the election as an opportunity to “turn the page on the municipal monarchy” and to deliver a rebuke to the policies of President Macron’s government.
Glucksmann’s political trajectory, as detailed on the Place Publique website, began with a background in journalism and documentary filmmaking, including work investigating the Rwandan genocide. He later served as a special advisor to the president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakachvili, from 2009 to 2012. In 2018, he founded Place Publique, aiming to consolidate social and ecological forces around shared ideals. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2019.
The support offered by both Glucksmann and Bompard highlights the fragmented nature of the left-wing political landscape in Angoulême as the municipal elections approach. While Mardikian’s list did not advance past the first round, the endorsements signal continued efforts to mobilize support and define the opposition to the current municipal leadership.
