OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Pulse, Delivering Proactive Daily Updates
SAN FRANCISCO – January 25, 2024 – OpenAI today released ChatGPT Pulse, a new feature for ChatGPT Pro subscribers that delivers personalized daily updates without requiring user prompts. The “push” feature represents OpenAI’s latest effort to evolve ChatGPT from a reactive chatbot to a proactive assistant, conducting overnight research to provide users with timely information.
ChatGPT Pulse analyzes a user’s chat history, saved preferences, and optionally, connected Gmail and Google Calendar data each night. Users recieve these updates as visual ”cards” - concise summaries with expandable details - the following morning. These cards may include project follow-ups, dinner suggestions, or travel recommendations, tailored to individual user needs.
OpenAI describes the process as “asynchronous research,” where the model generates and answers queries overnight using conventional methods. Updates are available for 24 hours unless saved or converted into a standard chat conversation via follow-up questions. Users can refine the updates through thumbs up/down feedback and a “curate” button to request specific topics.
Connecting Gmail and google Calendar allows ChatGPT Pulse to offer even more relevant suggestions, such as drafting meeting agendas, birthday gift reminders, or restaurant recommendations for upcoming trips. These integrations are disabled by default and must be enabled in settings.
During testing with collage students through the ChatGPT Lab program, OpenAI found the feature’s usefulness increased as users provided more specific guidance on desired content. OpenAI calls it “personalized research and timely updates that appear regularly to keep you informed.”
