BenQ has launched the RD280UG, a 28.2-inch monitor specifically designed to address the demands of software developers and coders, priced at A$1,299. The monitor aims to reduce eye strain and enhance productivity during extended coding sessions through a combination of display technology and ergonomic features.
The RD280UG distinguishes itself with a 4K+ resolution of 3840 x 2560 pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio. This deviates from the more common 16:9 widescreen format found in many monitors, offering increased vertical screen real estate. According to BenQ, this taller display allows developers to view more lines of code and document content simultaneously, reducing the need for frequent scrolling. The monitor also features a 120Hz refresh rate, a specification typically associated with gaming displays, which BenQ states provides smoother scrolling and a more responsive experience when navigating codebases.
To minimize visual fatigue, the RD280UG incorporates a Nano Matte panel intended to reduce glare and reflections under varying lighting conditions. BenQ has also included dedicated “Coding Modes” that dynamically adjust contrast and readability based on user preference for dark or light colour themes. Further eye-care features include a “Paper Colour Mode” designed to mimic the appearance of paper for a more comfortable viewing experience, a “MoonHalo” bias lighting system to improve ambient illumination around the monitor, and “Night Hours Protection” to reduce blue light exposure during nighttime perform.
The monitor offers a range of ergonomic adjustments, including height adjustment, rotation, and auto-pivot functionality, allowing users to customize the display position for optimal comfort. It is compatible with macOS, Windows, and Linux operating systems. A dedicated coding hotkey provides quick access to display settings without interrupting the coding workflow. The RD280UG supports VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, indicating a baseline level of high dynamic range performance, though reviews note that HDR capabilities are not a primary strength of the display.
The BenQ RD280UG includes a single HDMI 2.0 port. The monitor’s specifications include a 2000:1 contrast ratio. B&H Photo Video currently lists the monitor for sale at its standard retail price.
