Paris Art Scene Heats Up: Major Exhibitions Announced for Autumn 2025
Paris is preparing for a blockbuster autumn art season in 2025, with a diverse lineup of exhibitions ranging from modern masters to classical French painters.Among the highlights is a major retrospective dedicated to American expatriate artist John singer Sargent.
The Musée d’Orsay will host “John Singer Sargent: An American in Paris” from September 16, 2025, to January 12, 2026. The exhibition will explore Sargent’s pivotal years spent in Paris, showcasing over 80 works including paintings, watercolors, and drawings. The Musée d’Orsay notes that Paris was where Sargent “received his training and developed his style,” and the exhibition aims to reveal “a lesser-known facet of his work.”
Beyond Sargent, the Fondation Cartier will present “Exposition Générale,” displaying its entire collection – more than 600 international artists - and ”reactivating the architectural heritage of the new location…draw[ing] an alternative encyclopaedia of modern art.”
Classical art enthusiasts will also have much to anticipate. The Louvre Museum will stage a extensive retrospective of Jacques-Louis David from October 15, 2025, to January 26, 2026, bringing together 100 works to understand “the rich artistic, political, and social journey of David.” The museum emphasizes that Jacques-Louis David “has certainly left his mark on our collective visual memory.”
Simultaneously, the jacquemart-André museum will feature “Georges de La Tour: Between Shadow and Light” (September 11, 2025 – January 25, 2026), gathering over 30 masterpieces by the artist renowned for his chiaroscuro, representing “a unique chance to experience the pieces of an artist whose limited output is rarely shown.”
