Google Pixel owners can now leverage a new artificial intelligence-powered tool to identify potential scam text messages and direct messages, a feature rolled out with the latest Android 16 QPR3 release in early March 2026. The tool, called Circle to Search, goes beyond its initial function of identifying objects within images and now offers a layer of security against increasingly sophisticated phishing attempts.
The rise in deceptive messaging has made it difficult for individuals to discern legitimate communications from fraudulent ones. Although many users routinely report and block suspicious numbers, scammers are adept at crafting messages that appear convincing. Circle to Search aims to address this challenge by analyzing the content of a message and alerting the user if it detects characteristics commonly associated with scams.
To utilize the feature, users with compatible devices – Google Pixel 6 or newer, or Samsung Galaxy S21 or newer – must first ensure We see enabled in the phone’s settings. This involves navigating to Display & touch, then Navigation mode, and toggling on Circle to Search. Once activated, users can long-press the navigation bar within the messaging app, draw a circle around the suspect message, and allow the AI to assess its legitimacy.
According to early testers, the AI has proven remarkably accurate in identifying scams. While not foolproof, the feature provides an additional safeguard against falling victim to malicious schemes. Even when Circle to Search deems a message safe, users are advised to exercise caution and conduct further research if any doubts remain, as the AI can occasionally develop errors.
The introduction of Android Desktop Mode, available on Pixel 8 and newer devices, offers another way Pixel users can interact with their phones. Connecting a Pixel 8 or newer to an external monitor via USB-C transforms the phone into a desktop-like experience, complete with a taskbar and the ability to run apps in windows. Still, a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard are required to fully utilize this functionality, as Pixels currently lack the trackpad capabilities found in Samsung DeX.
While Android Desktop Mode expands the functionality of Pixel phones, Circle to Search addresses a growing security concern. The feature’s integration into Android represents a proactive step by Google to combat the increasing prevalence of scam messaging and protect its users from potential harm.
