Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died, his family announced on March 20, 2026. He was 54 years old. According to a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter, Brendon passed away in his sleep of natural causes.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the family statement read. “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor, and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends, and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
The statement acknowledged Brendon’s well-documented struggles with legal issues, addiction, and health problems, noting that he was actively receiving medication and treatment at the time of his death. “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart,” the statement concluded. “Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
While widely recognized for his portrayal of Xander Harris, a core member of the Scooby Gang throughout “Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s” seven-season run, Brendon also appeared in other television shows and films. His credits include the role of Kevin Lynch in “Criminal Minds,” and appearances in the cult films “Psycho Beach Party” and “Coherence.” He was a frequent presence at science fiction and fandom conventions.
Brendon’s death marks the second significant loss for the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” cast in recent years, following the passing of Michelle Trachtenberg in 2025. Xander Harris, despite being a central character, has faced scrutiny in recent years as some of the character’s traits have not aged well. Brendon publicly discussed his personal challenges, including appearing on an episode of “Dr. Phil” in 2015 to seek help.
In 2023, Brendon revealed he had survived a heart attack and been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. He also lived with cauda equina syndrome, requiring multiple spinal surgeries. Brendon had initially pursued acting as a means to overcome a stutter and became an advocate for the Stuttering Foundation of America.
Beyond his acting work, Brendon had developed a passion for painting and also contributed as a writer to the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” comic book series. Reflecting on the present’s legacy in a 2017 interview with ScienceFiction.com, Brendon expressed his surprise at the enduring impact of the series, stating, “I guess the fact that I’m here right now, you know? That people still care and that it had the effect that it had.”
Nicholas Brendon is survived by his twin brother, Kelly Donovan, and his wider circle of friends and family.
