Tommy Shelby is back. Netflix will release Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man on March 20, 2026, continuing the story of the Birmingham gang leader previously chronicled in the acclaimed BBC and Netflix series, Peaky Blinders. The film finds Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, pulled out of self-imposed exile, confronting a new threat and a complicated family history.
The series concluded in 2022 with Tommy Shelby seemingly escaping his violent past. After being falsely led to believe he had a terminal illness, Tommy spared the doctor who delivered the false diagnosis, a marked departure from his earlier ruthlessness. He then burned his possessions and rode off on a white horse, a symbolic reversal of his initial appearance on a black horse at the series’ outset. However, this attempt at a new beginning is short-lived.
The Immortal Man introduces Duke Shelby, Tommy’s illegitimate son, portrayed by Barry Keoghan. Duke has taken control of the Peaky Blinders in Tommy’s absence, but is leading the gang down a dangerous path during the early stages of World War II. The film’s central conflict arises from the villainous John Beckett, played by Tim Roth, attempting to manipulate Duke into aiding Germany’s war effort.
Murphy highlighted the core of the film’s narrative, stating, “When we got the story… Clicking, it became just about family, about father and son,” according to reports. Tommy’s return is driven by a need to protect his son and prevent Beckett’s influence from corrupting the Peaky Blinders.
The film also features Rebecca Ferguson, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, Jay Lycurgo, and Stephen Graham. Tom Harper, who directed episodes of the original series, directs The Immortal Man from a script penned by series creator Steven Knight.
While The Immortal Man aims to provide a conclusive chapter for Tommy Shelby, the Peaky Blinders universe is set to expand. A sequel series is already in development, with Knight returning as a writer and executive producer. The new series will be set in Birmingham in 1953 and will focus on a new generation of the Shelby family.
“I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story,” Knight said in a statement to Netflix. “Once again, it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel, and it will be a hell of a ride.” The sequel has received a two-season order, each consisting of six hourlong episodes. Murphy will serve as an executive producer on the series, but will not appear on screen.
Netflix recommends that viewers familiarize themselves with the original series before watching The Immortal Man, suggesting that watching at least the pilot episode will provide necessary context for the characters and the show’s style.
