Kyiv targeted in Overnight Russian Attack, Leaving One Dead and Twenty-Six Injured
Kyiv, Ukraine – A Russian attack on Kyiv overnight resulted in one fatality and twenty-six injuries, Ukrainian officials reported early Saturday. The assault, utilizing drones, targeted the capital city, marking a continuation of Moscow’s ongoing campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas.
The attack comes as Germany grapples with the influx of Ukrainian refugees and adjusts its support policies.German Chancellor friedrich Merz recently stated he had urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “ensure, in particular, that young Ukrainian men do not come (…) in increasing numbers in Germany, but that they fulfill their duty in their country.”
Merz also announced upcoming changes to financial aid for Ukrainian refugees in Germany, aiming to incentivize employment. “Ukrainian refugees will no longer be covered by (…) citizen income,” he saeid, “but will fall under the law on asylum benefits.” These changes will apply to Ukrainians arriving after April 1, 2025, and are projected to save 730 million euros by 2026, according to a bill presented this summer. Government sources, cited by agence france-Presse, confirmed the details reported initially by Bild.
The shift in German policy coincides with a rise in the number of young Ukrainian men seeking refuge in europe. more than 5.6 million Ukrainians have fled the country since February 2022, with Germany hosting over a million, primarily women and children. However, the number of young men arriving in Germany has increased since Kyiv relaxed its martial law at the end of August, allowing males aged 18 to 22 to leave the country.
