Disturbing body camera footage released Tuesday by the Los Angeles Police Department depicts the fatal collision between a patrol car and a skateboarder in Highland Park. The incident, which occurred near a carnival, resulted in the death of 22-year-old Jose Alfredo Estrada.
The release of the video comes as the LAPD faces scrutiny regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash and the immediate aftermath.The department’s examination, expected to last months, will determine the factors contributing to the tragedy and whether protocols were followed.The incident underscores ongoing concerns about police conduct and accountability, especially in interactions with civilians.
Footage from an officer’s body-worn camera shows the moment of impact. Witnesses at the carnival immediately reacted, with shouts of alarm and demands for assistance.”Do something, there’s somebody f- dying!” one bystander yelled, according to the video.
Officers quickly removed Estrada from under the vehicle and began administering first aid. Though, firefighters arriving at the scene later pronounced him dead.
LAPD officials have not yet publicly identified the officers involved in the collision. According to department spokesperson Captain stacy Bland, the investigation is ongoing.
Estrada’s mother,Rosa Casares,shared with KTLA that her son was returning home from work at the time of the incident. “He was a wonderful kid,” she saeid.
The crash remains under investigation.
