Trump Claims Seth Meyers‘ Criticism might potentially be ‘Probably Illegal’
NEW YORK – Former President Donald Trump lashed out at late-night host Seth Meyers on thursday, claiming the comedian’s mockery of him is “probably illegal.” The rebuke follows a segment on Late Night with Seth Meyers where the host joked about Trump’s recent rally speech, specifically referencing the former president’s detailed discussion of aircraft carrier catapults.
“Guy spends more time thinking about catapults than Wile E. Coyote,” Meyers quipped in his “Closer Look” segment. Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, accusing Meyers of making “false and defamatory statements” and suggesting legal repercussions. This exchange occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Trump and late-night television hosts, marked by recent actions taken against Jimmy Kimmel.
The former president’s criticism of Meyers carries added weight given his governance’s recent pressure tactics against Kimmel. In july, Trump celebrated the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, promising similar action against Jimmy Kimmel Live!.Shortly after, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! for six days following backlash from affiliate groups like Nexstar and Sinclair Broadcasting Group over a comment regarding the Republican response to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
That suspension was advocated by Trump’s former FCC chair, Brendan Carr. trump subsequently wrote on Truth Social,”Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible.” Jimmy Kimmel live! has since returned to air and experienced a decade-high ratings spike following the suspension.
