‘Daily Show’ Suggests Trump‘s Push to Indict Comey May Backfire With New Prosecutor Appointment
Lindsey Halligan’s recent appointment as acting U.S. attorney for Virginia’s eastern District – the office that recently indicted former FBI Director James Comey – could inadvertently benefit the ex-FBI chief, according to commentary on Thursday’s episode of “The Daily Show.” Host Jordan Klepper highlighted Halligan’s limited legal experience, noting she has no history of prosecuting cases.
Comey is facing one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice. The indictment follows public criticism from President Donald Trump earlier this month, where he expressed frustration with Attorney general Pam Bondi for not pursuing charges against his political opponents, including Comey.
Klepper pointed out that many prosecutors question the strength of the case against comey. “So, the bad news is Trump continues to appoint people to positions they’re wholly unqualified for,” Klepper stated. “But the good news is Trump continues to appoint people to positions they are completely unqualified for. Simply put, don’t worry James Comey, you don’t have to learn how to make toilet hooch just yet.”
Correspondent Troy Iwata, reporting from outside the Justice Department, added a lighthearted outlook, saying he was “kind of rooting for” Halligan, citing an “American love for an underdog” and comparing her situation to the film “Legally Blonde.”
