PITTSBURGH, PA (September 19) – Over 150 Pittsburgh residents gained greater independence today at the 13th annual wheelchair wash and tune-up clinic held at UPMC Mercy Pavilion. The event, a vital resource for wheelchair users, provided free minor repairs and cleaning services.

“My wheelchair is my freedom. It is my tool to get out of my house. It is indeed how I participate in life in the community,” explained Alisa Grishman, a pittsburgh resident and event attendee.
the clinic is a collaborative effort sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the department of physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the School of Medicine, and UPMC Rehabilitation Institute. Beyond repairs, the event connected attendees with local disability service organizations and vendors.
The wheelchair wash and tune-up also offers a valuable educational experience for Pitt students and faculty.mariana Pacheco Busquets, a postdoctoral associate in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, highlighted the benefits.”My priority at the Center for Assistive Technology is mainly research, but as an occupational therapist, I’m vrey interested in seating and mobility,” she said. “I’ve been very lucky to have the shadowing and hands-on experience at the wheelchair wash and tune-up clinic.”
