Tory Lanez‘s Appeal in Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Case Receives Partial Denial
Los Angeles, CA – A California appeals court has partially denied Tory Lanez’s appeal in his case stemming from the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, according too court documents released in May 2023.While some claims were considered, the court upheld his conviction and 10-year prison sentence. This ruling arrives as Lanez’s legal team continues to pursue avenues for his release, most recently alleging a statement from a former bodyguard implicating Megan Thee Stallion’s ex-friend, Kelsey Harris, in the shooting.
The case, which captivated national attention, centers on an altercation that left Megan Thee Stallion wounded. Lanez was found guilty in december 2022 of three felony charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. The 10-year sentence handed down in August 2023 sparked immediate calls for clemency and a flurry of activity from Lanez’s supporters, including a petition signed by numerous artists and advocacy from several politicians.
Despite the partial denial of his appeal, Lanez’s legal team is pressing forward with new evidence. They claim a recent statement from a bodyguard alleges that Kelsey Harris confessed to being the shooter. megan Thee Stallion’s attorney, Mari Henderson, dismissed these efforts as attempts to “harass and terrorize and re-victimize” her client, stating Lanez is “faced with the harsh reality” of his sentence and seeking to generate public sympathy.
“This is someone who’s faced with the harsh reality that he was sentenced for his crime to 10 years and has to face his punishment and is trying to drum up media attention and conspiracy theorists and mouthpieces to continue to harass and terrorize and re-victimize Meg, who just wants to put a close to this painful chapter on her life now going five years later,” Henderson told XXL in May.
Lanez currently remains incarcerated. A growing number of rappers, including Drake and Kanye West, have signed an online petition urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to pardon the canadian entertainer, and multiple politicians have publicly voiced support for his release. The outcome of these efforts, and any further appeals, will determine whether Lanez serves the full decade-long sentence.
