Kédougou, Senegal – Fifty female students from the 4ème and 3ème classes (middle school grades) in the Saraya department recently completed an intensive eight-day training program designed to bolster their academic performance and future opportunities. The program focused on strengthening skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) alongside crucial personal development workshops.

The initiative, which concluded yesterday, received vital support from UNICEF. Beyond academic enrichment, the training also incorporated modules on child protection and the prevention of violence, addressing critical issues impacting young girls’ well-being.

Mamadou Mballo, Secretary General of the Kédougou academy inspection, explained the program’s core objective: “To help these young girls improve their academic results and increase their chances of success. We focused on strengthening the capacities of fifty girls in personal development and STEM fields.” He further clarified that the program was strategically implemented during school holidays to address identified learning gaps and specifically target young girls within the Saraya department’s education and training inspection.

Papa Abdoulaye Mbaye, Deputy Prefect of the Kédougou department, presided over the closing ceremony. He emphasized the importance of expanding such initiatives to schools throughout the region, advocating for increased support for girls’ education and empowerment. “We must multiply these types of initiatives in all schools in the region, in order to better accompany girls,” Mbaye stated.

This training represents a significant investment in the future of these young women, providing them with the tools and knowledge to excel in STEM fields and navigate challenges with greater confidence. The program’s focus on both academic and personal development underscores a holistic approach to education, recognizing the interconnectedness of these factors in achieving lasting success.

Context: Senegal has made strides in improving access to education, but gender disparities persist, particularly in STEM fields. Initiatives like this one are crucial for bridging the gap and empowering girls to pursue careers in these vital areas. UNICEF’s involvement highlights the global commitment to ensuring equitable access to quality education for all children.

Trends: There’s a growing global emphasis on STEM education, driven by the increasing demand for skilled workers in these fields. Programs specifically targeting girls are gaining traction as a means of addressing historical underrepresentation and fostering diversity in STEM.
