WWE SmackDown: Orton’s Chaos, McIntyre-Fatu Feud & Tag Team Shakeup

Randy Orton punctuated a night of mixed results on WWE SmackDown with a brutal assault on Matt Cardona, continuing a disturbing pattern of aggression as WrestleMania approaches. The March 20 episode, broadcast from the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, featured title changes and escalating tensions, but was ultimately overshadowed by Orton’s increasingly erratic behavior.

Orton, following a heel turn last week, addressed the crowd, claiming his actions stemmed from a desire to solidify his legacy and dismissing the importance of fan adoration. He asserted that Cody Rhodes’ previous challenge had “lifted a burden,” signaling a renewed focus on dominance. Despite his villainous rhetoric, Orton received a largely positive reaction from the Raleigh crowd.

The night took a darker turn backstage when Orton encountered Matt Cardona, who attempted to reason with the veteran wrestler. Orton responded with a forearm and a verbal lashing, criticizing Cardona’s independent wrestling career. Later, Orton seemingly attempted to reconcile, apologizing to Cardona only to deliver a low blow and an RKO. The assault continued after officials intervened, with Orton repeatedly overpowering security and ultimately stomping on Cardona’s arm with a chair, despite the presence of over twenty officials attempting to restrain him.

Elsewhere on the card, Drew McIntyre and Jacob Fatu continued their volatile feud, initiating a brawl that began with McIntyre driving a car into Fatu’s vehicle. The altercation escalated throughout the evening, culminating in both men falling from a platform, setting the stage for a stipulation match at WrestleMania. WWE General Manager Nick Aldis attempted to control the chaos, but his efforts proved largely ineffective.

In championship action, Damian Priest and R-Truth unexpectedly captured the WWE Tag Team Championships from MFT (Tama Tonga and JC Mateo). The match was influenced by the interference of Uncle Howdy and his Wyatt Sicks, leading to a victory for the recent champions. Following the match, Tonga and Solo Sikoa engaged in a tense exchange, with Tonga urging Sikoa to relinquish a lantern, hinting at a potential shift in their alliance.

The U.S. Championship remained with Carmelo Hayes, who defeated Ilja Dragunov in a hard-fought contest. Sami Zayn and Aleister Black also competed in a singles match, with Black securing the win after Trick Williams’ presence at ringside proved a distraction for Zayn. Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin) defeated Fraxiom (Axiom and Nathan Frazer) with assistance from Candice LeRae.

The women’s division saw further confusion as The Irresistible Forces (Nia Jax and Lash Legend) faced The Bella Twins in a tag team match that ended in a no-contest when Charlotte Flair interfered to prevent Jax from using the title as a weapon. Jade Cargill’s storyline also took an unexpected turn with the addition of Michin and B-Fab as allies, despite Cargill’s previous victory over Michin.

A segment featuring Jelly Roll and Kit Wilson devolved into a verbal exchange, ultimately leading to a physical confrontation. The indicate concluded with McIntyre and Fatu continuing their brawl, leaving their WrestleMania match’s stipulations unresolved.
