Vietnam Launches Major Initiative to Improve School Sanitation
HANOI, Vietnam – A nationwide project exceeding 60 billion Vietnamese Dong (VND) is underway to dramatically improve hygiene conditions in schools across disadvantaged localities. The “1000 School Bathrooms” project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Education and Training in partnership with various organizations, aims to construct and renovate at least 1,000 toilets over a ten-year period.
The initiative addresses critical sanitation gaps and seeks to instill lifelong personal hygiene habits in students. In 2025 alone, 102 projects were launched across 11 provinces, with 39 successfully completed and operationalized. Additionally, 300 toilet facilities, valued at VND18 billion, were donated by implementing units during the same year.
Beyond infrastructure growth, the project incorporates extensive health education. Schools are being equipped with handwashing instruction panels aligned with standards from the Ministry of Health, and access to handwashing water is being provided. Training programs focusing on personal hygiene, safe water usage, and adolescent reproductive health are also being conducted, alongside hygiene festivals and communication campaigns within schools.
The project represents a important investment in the well-being and educational habitat for students in underserved communities throughout Vietnam.
