Utrecht Manhunt: Armed Escaped Prisoner Apprehended After Hospital Breakout

Utrecht, Netherlands – A man detained by Dutch authorities has been apprehended following a large-scale search operation launched earlier today after he escaped from the Diakonessenhuis hospital while under guard. The fugitive, described as being from “the justicial circuit,” according to authorities, managed to overpower his two escorts and flee with a firearm.

The incident began around 11:30 AM local time when the detainee, who was at the hospital for an appointment, physically assaulted his guards, disarming one of them before escaping the premises. Police immediately initiated a manhunt, deploying canine units and a helicopter to search the surrounding area, focusing initially on the direction of Stadion Galgenwaard, according to reports.

The search prompted a temporary lockdown of a wing of the nearby Bonifatiuscollege secondary school as a precautionary measure. Police responded to a tip suggesting the suspect might be on school grounds, leading to the evacuation and thorough search of classrooms. The school was later reopened around 1:45 PM after authorities determined the tip was inaccurate. Students reported a calm atmosphere during the lockdown, with agents systematically checking classrooms.

Authorities released a description of the suspect as a light-skinned man, approximately 1.80 meters tall, with short dark hair, a sturdy build, and noticeable scars on his face. He was last seen wearing a light grey sweater and trousers. Police repeatedly urged the public not to approach the man if spotted and to immediately contact emergency services by dialing 112.

A witness at the hospital described seeing the suspect running from one of the hospital corridors, “going right through the revolving doors.” The struggle between the suspect and his guards reportedly took place outside the hospital building.

While the identity of the detainee and the nature of his original offense have not been publicly released, the incident has raised security concerns regarding the transport and supervision of prisoners receiving medical care. The Diakonessenhuis stated that hospital operations continued without disruption, citing a strong police presence and security measures.

As of this afternoon, the fugitive was apprehended, bringing an end to the hours-long search. Details surrounding the arrest, including the location and circumstances, have not yet been disclosed by authorities.
