Students from Liceo N° 2 to Showcase Innovative science Project at National ExpoScience
A team of students – Catalina Morales, Facundo Lemos, and Vladimir Maksimchuk – from Liceo N° 2 “Antonio Grompone” in Salto, guided by teachers Mariana Pizarro and Gabriela Silva, have earned a place to represent their department at the national Uruguay ExpoScience 2025, taking place November 12-14 in piriapolis.Their project focuses on scientific dissemination of the promising fields of regenerative medicine and nanotechnology.
The project, titled “Scientific dissemination on Regenerative Medicine in conjunction with Nanotechnology,” aimed to increase understanding and spark interest in these cutting-edge medical advancements among fellow students and teachers. Through interviews with Uruguayan experts in sports medicine, pain management, biotechnology, and nanotechnology (including a specialist from the Faculty of Chemistry), coupled with an informative presentation and before-and-after surveys, the students demonstrated the power of clear scientific communication.
Their research highlighted the potential of combining regenerative medicine – which utilizes stem cells to repair or replace damaged tissues and organs – with nanotechnology, which employs “smart” nanoparticles for targeted and controlled drug delivery. This combination offers the potential for more effective and less invasive treatments for conditions like osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and spinal cord injuries.
The students found that regenerative medicine is already playing a meaningful role in pain treatment in Uruguay, with nanotechnology showing strong potential for regional growth. Surveys at their school revealed a significant shift in understanding: initially, many students associated regenerative medicine with simply “strengthening the body,” but after the presentation, they grasped its true purpose of tissue repair and functional restoration. The project also fostered greater acceptance of these innovative treatments.
“This project allowed us to verify that science can reach everyone if it communicates clearly,” the team stated, noting the increased curiosity among their peers to learn more. Their success in promoting scientific literacy has earned them a well-deserved spot at the National Uruguay ExpoScience Stage 2025.
