Prior to departing the White House, Trump convened with Republican senators, acknowledging the impact of the ongoing 36-day government shutdown - now the longest in U.S. history – on the party’s electoral performance. He urged the senators to resolve the impasse by eliminating the filibuster, the Senate rule requiring a 60-vote threshold for moast legislation. However, a leading Republican senator reportedly dismissed the proposal, stating, “that’s not happening.”
The shutdown continues to disrupt the lives of millions of Americans, leading to cuts in federal programs, travel delays, and the withholding of paychecks for federal employees across the nation. Democrats have called for a meeting with President Trump to discuss a resolution,but the President has insisted that the government must be reopened before any negotiations can take place.
