Trump Gets Gold Coin: Legal Loophole Approved for US Bicentennial

A U.S. Advisory committee, appointed by President Donald Trump, has approved the minting of a gold commemorative coin bearing his likeness, a move permitted by a legal loophole. The decision, made on March 20, 2026, coincides with the planned celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The coin is part of a series being produced by the U.S. Mint to commemorate the semiquincentennial. Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach stated, according to Reuters, “Given our approaching 250th birthday, we are particularly excited to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and our democracy, and there is no more emblematic profile for the obverse of such coins than that of our current president, Donald J. Trump.”

Discussions surrounding the coin’s design included its potential diameter, with a U.S. Mint official suggesting it could reach up to 7.6 centimeters. Chamberlain Harris, a White House advisor appointed by Trump to the art commission, reportedly advocated for the largest possible size, stating, “Bigger is better,” shortly before the committee’s unanimous approval. The U.S. Mint will now finalize the coin’s dimensions.

The Trump administration has also proposed the creation of a one-dollar coin featuring Trump’s image for general circulation later this year. Donald Scarinci, a member of a separate advisory panel, noted last month that such a coin would likely violate a law prohibiting the depiction of a current or former president on a dollar coin until three years after leaving office. Though, the gold commemorative coin avoids this restriction as it is designated as a collector’s item and not intended for circulation.

Donald Trump is currently serving his second non-consecutive term as President of the United States, having previously held office from 2017 to 2021. He assumed office again on January 20, 2025, with James David (JD) Vance as his Vice President, according to USAGov. The approval of the commemorative coin follows a period of increased scrutiny surrounding Trump’s foreign policy decisions, including recent developments related to Iran, as reported by the Associated Press.

The Pentagon is currently seeking $200 billion in additional funding for the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to an AP source. This request comes amid a reported split between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding a gas field in Iran, a situation that could further escalate tensions in the region. The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on the funding request or the reported disagreement with Netanyahu.
