Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to reprise their roles in a fourth Mummy film, which will serve as a direct sequel to The Mummy Returns (2001), effectively disregarding 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon emperor. The news signals a return to the franchise’s roots after a stalled “Dark Universe” attempt and a separate Blumhouse project was sidelined.
The upcoming film, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream 5-6, Abigail), will ignore the events of the third installment, marking a important course correction for the series. Original producer Sean Daniel is also returning. This decision impacts a competing Mummy project from Blumhouse, now retitled The Resurrected, directed by Lee Cronin (evil Dead Rise).
The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns starred Fraser and Weisz as adventurers Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, respectively.Tomb of the Dragon Emperor featured Maria Bello replacing Weisz and a significantly aged Alex O’Connell, played by Luke Ford, thirteen years younger than Fraser. The new sequel aims to recapture the spirit of the original films, potentially offering a continuation of the beloved O’Connell-Carnahan dynamic.
