netflix Considers Wider Theatrical Release for David Fincher‘s “Cliff booth”
LOS ANGELES, CA – netflix is exploring a significant expansion of its theatrical strategy, with plans for David Fincher’s upcoming film, “Adventures of Cliff Booth,” perhaps receiving a broader cinema rollout than initially anticipated. The move comes as a thaw develops between the streamer adn major exhibitors like AMC Theatres, who recently booked Netflix‘s ”KPop Demon Hunters” for 300 venues.
For years, Netflix and cinema chains have been at odds over traditional theatrical windows – the period of exclusivity granted to cinemas before a film is available elsewhere. Netflix previously showed limited interest in extensive cinema releases beyond awards-qualifying runs. However, an equity researcher told Variety that the company now appears focused on maximizing the reach of select titles and driving subscriptions.
“Adventures of Cliff Booth,” a spinoff of Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 hit “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” starring Brad Pitt, is currently slated for release in Summer 2026.while initial plans called for a two-week exclusive IMAX run for Greta Gerwig’s 2026 “Narnia” adaptation, Netflix is now considering expanding that release into more standard cinemas.
The potential shift in strategy is mutually beneficial. Exhibitors, still recovering from pandemic-era revenue declines, are seeking guaranteed hits. One-off events and special screenings, like those for “KPop Demon Hunters” and the upcoming “Stranger Things” finale, offer additional revenue during slower periods and come with favorable terms for cinemas.
Netflix is “contemplating a more robust rollout” for “Cliff Booth,” according to industry sources. However, theatrical plans for both films remain subject to change and will not be finalized until closer to their respective release dates.
