montréal Faces Potential Voting Delays as Élections Montréal Scrambles to Fill Key roles
With municipal elections just two weeks away, Élections Montréal is urgently seeking nearly 13,000 workers to staff over 450 polling locations across the island’s 19 arrondissements. A shortage of personnel, notably for positions like scrutateurs and secrétaires, threatens potential disruptions to the voting process.
The need for a robust workforce is critical to ensure smooth and accessible voting for Montréal residents on November 2nd. While recruitment efforts have been underway since mid-September, with interviews and hiring already completed for many positions, gaps remain. These elections determine the future leadership and direction of Montréal, impacting everything from city services to long-term planning. Voters can participate thru advance voting on October 26th (from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.) or on election day, November 2nd (from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.).
“We’ve started the interviews mid-September and we’ve hired people, and now we’re more in training mode,” explained Sébastien Trottier, spokesperson for Élections Montréal, to TVA Nouvelles on Sunday. “Even tho things are going well, there are still unfilled positions in some arrondissements, mainly for secretaries and scrutators.”
Those interested in contributing to the democratic process are encouraged to apply online at elections.montreal.ca. Successful applicants will be required to complete a theoretical training program, including an explanatory video and online workshops.
