Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner reportedly exited the 2026 Oscars ceremony early following a series of jokes made at the actor’s expense by host Conan O’Brien, according to Newsweek. The incident occurred after Chalamet faced criticism for comments he made regarding financial support for the arts, specifically a perceived slight towards ballet and opera.
O’Brien’s opening monologue included a joke referencing security concerns stemming from potential backlash from the opera and ballet communities, a direct response to the controversy surrounding Chalamet’s recent statements. While Chalamet initially responded with sportsmanship, applauding other winners, including Michael B. Jordan’s Best Actor win for “Sinners,” he and Jenner ultimately left the auditorium, according to sources who spoke with The Sun.
The controversy began after an interview where Chalamet expressed a preference for film and television acting, implicitly suggesting those avenues offered greater financial stability than careers in ballet or opera. This comment ignited a swift backlash on social media, transforming the marketing campaign for his Oscar-nominated film, “Marty Supreme,” into a source of negative attention.
Despite not winning the Best Actor award, Chalamet was a frequent focus of the broadcast, with cameras often cutting to him throughout the evening. He had previously received accolades during the 2026 awards season, winning Best Actor at both the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, where he publicly thanked Jenner in his acceptance speech. At the Critics Choice Awards, Chalamet stated, “Thank you for our foundation. I love you. I couldn’t do this without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Jenner, in a subsequent interview with Vanity Fair, described being “flustered” in a “charming way” by the public acknowledgment.
Chalamet and Jenner have been a couple since 2023, and Jenner accompanied him to several awards shows throughout the season, including the Palm Springs Film Festival, the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, and the BAFTAs. Chalamet celebrated his 30th birthday with a surprise IMAX screening of “Interstellar” arranged by Jenner, an event he initially approached with skepticism before being delighted by the gesture.
Following the Oscars, Chalamet was absent from the launch event for the first trailer of “Dune: Part Three,” while his co-stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson were in attendance. The couple’s departure from the Oscars ceremony remains a point of discussion, with no official statement released by either Chalamet or Jenner regarding the incident.
