Indonesia Signals Readiness to Deploy Peacekeeping Force to Gaza, Amidst Israeli Assertions of Control
Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia has indicated its willingness to contribute up to 20,000 peacekeeping personnel to Gaza, following a commitment from President Joko Widodo to offer assistance in post-war reconstruction efforts. The offer comes as international discussions intensify regarding the future of Gaza and potential stabilization forces, tho Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel will determine its own security arrangements.
Indonesia’s potential involvement hinges on a formal mandate from the UN Security Council. Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto announced the government’s readiness to deploy a ample force during a Plenary Cabinet Session on October 20th, while Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Sriwahyuningtyas clarified that any deployment would be “in accordance with the needs and mandate of the UN,” adhering to decisions established by the UN Security Council. This offer reflects Indonesia’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism and its active role in international peacekeeping operations.
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has confirmed its preparedness to execute any government directive regarding troop deployment. ”In principle, the TNI is always ready to implement every government decision and policy,” stated major General Freddy Ardianzah, Head of the TNI Information Center, adding that specialized units are prepared for both humanitarian and peace missions abroad. Ardianzah emphasized that all TNI involvement would align with Indonesia’s foreign policy and the state’s mandate.
Netanyahu’s recent statement asserting Israel’s control over its own security arrangements introduces a important point of contention. The UN has yet to issue a formal mandate for a peacekeeping force, and the extent to which Israel would allow external intervention remains unclear.
The potential deployment is also garnering international attention, as evidenced by inquiries from the US and Türkiye regarding Indonesia’s position on a Gaza Peace Force, as prabowo confirmed. Indonesia’s offer represents a significant potential contribution to post-conflict stabilization, but its realization depends on navigating complex political and security considerations.
