Portugal’s tax authority, the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT), has warned citizens of potential disruptions to its online services this weekend due to scheduled maintenance. The disruptions will affect access to essential tax functions, including filing returns, checking tax status, and making payments.
The maintenance will occur in two phases. The first phase began Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 9:00h and is expected to continue throughout the day, potentially causing partial or complete outages. A more significant outage is planned for Sunday, March 22, 2026, starting at midnight and lasting for a maximum of 13 hours, impacting the majority of the platform’s functionalities.
According to a notice from the AT, the maintenance is intended to improve system performance, security, and stability. Users have been cautioned that they may experience difficulties or complete inability to access services during these periods, and that intermittent access could lead to errors or failed transactions.
The Portal das Finanças, the AT’s online portal, is a critical resource for Portuguese taxpayers. The planned downtime comes as the AT is also conducting competency assessment interviews for 390 positions within its tax and customs management and inspection career path.
The AT has not specified the exact nature of the system updates being implemented. The agency’s website indicates that it regularly undertakes such interventions to update systems, correct errors, and enhance digital infrastructure security.
