Outdated Fashion: Declutter Your Closet in 2024 & Beyond

Stylists are advising a clear-out of low-rise jeans, oversized logo tees, embellished sweaters, 7/8 sleeve blazers, and neon colors as fashion trends shift towards quality, timelessness, and balanced silhouettes for 2026.

The advice comes as fashion cycles accelerate, leaving trends feeling dated quickly, according to reports from Slovakian fashion site Diva.sk. Stylist Roberta Čabráková, known on Instagram as chic_styles_by_robi, recommends prioritizing higher-waisted trousers and classic pieces over fleeting trends.

Čabráková specifically called out low-rise jeans as a key item to discard, advocating for higher-waisted styles that are more flattering. She also advised against tops and sweaters featuring large logos, noting a move towards “quiet luxury” – a trend emphasizing quality materials and understated design. “Big logos of fashion brands gaze rather distracting, and fashion is moving in a different direction,” Čabráková said, according to Diva.sk.

The shift extends to outerwear. Sakas (blazers) with 7/8-inch sleeves are also being deemed outdated, with classic, full-length sleeves preferred. Similarly, skinny jeans and overly tight, short sweaters are falling out of favor, with looser fits recommended for a more balanced look.

Beyond specific garments, color palettes are also undergoing a change. Whereas color is returning to fashion, neon shades are being replaced by more muted and flattering tones. Čabráková noted that neons “rarely suit anyone.” The move away from neons aligns with a broader trend towards sophistication and wearability.

The stylist also highlighted a decline in popularity for distressed denim – ripped or heavily worn jeans – and a preference for higher-quality materials and better tailoring. “We are slowly moving away from low-quality materials and synthetic fabrics, preferring smooth materials and good fits,” Čabráková stated.

Styling itself is evolving, moving away from rigidly defined looks. Čabráková described a trend of mixing styles, combining traditionally sporty pieces with more formal wear, such as pairing a trench coat with everyday attire and adding jewelry and accessories. Oversized silhouettes are also being tempered, with a return to more balanced and feminine shapes, like fitted knit mini dresses paired with belts to create structure.

Čabráková emphasized the importance of investing in timeless pieces made from quality materials, such as well-made coats, jackets, and cashmere sweaters, that can be incorporated into multiple outfits. She also noted a growing awareness of sustainability and ethical production within the fashion industry, with brands responding by offering premium collections using higher-quality, more eco-friendly materials.

The trend towards quality and sustainability is reflected in consumer preferences, with shoppers increasingly willing to pay more for durable, ethically produced items, according to Čabráková.
