Cleveland, OH – As “No Shave november” gains momentum, men across the country are letting their facial hair grow, but dermatologists warn that proper beard hygiene is crucial for healthy skin. Dr.Jennifer Lucas, a dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic, offers essential advice for first-time participants and seasoned beard growers alike.
The annual tradition, often embraced for charitable causes or simply as a personal challenge, requires more than just abstaining from shaving. Neglecting skincare during beard growth can lead to irritation, bacterial buildup, and discomfort.Dr. Lucas emphasizes that the skin beneath the beard still requires daily cleansing and moisturizing.
“it’s important to remember that the skin under your beard still needs to be washed on a daily basis,” Dr. lucas stated. “You should also be using a moisturizer when you’re done.” She also cautions against frequently touching the beard, as this can transfer bacteria and cause issues.
Maintaining clean grooming tools is equally important. Dr. Lucas recommends cleaning clippers, razors, and other implements every five to seven days to prevent bacterial contamination. “Bacteria live on these tools, so you want to make sure you’re cleaning that off…just making sure that you’re not getting bacteria you are going to stick right back into your beard area,” she explained.
While patchy beard growth is often attributed to genetics, Dr. Lucas notes that certain medical conditions can also contribute. Anyone experiencing significant concerns about beard growth or skin health should consult a medical professional.
