Niall Horan Honors Liam Payne with New Song “End of an Era”

Niall Horan, the former One Direction member, has revealed a deeply personal tribute to his late bandmate Liam Payne in an upcoming song, “Conclude of an Era,” featured on his new album, “Dinner Party.” Payne died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after a fall from a balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while reportedly under the influence of multiple substances.

Horan described the shock and grief he experienced upon learning of Payne’s death, recalling, “I just remember getting a message, and I just didn’t consider it was real. Someone so young, you’re not expecting to hear that they’ve passed, especially someone that you’ve just seen. I just went back from shock to sadness to anger.” The pair had reunited in South America just weeks before the tragedy, with Horan noting their meeting felt natural. “It was great,” he said. “Seemed in good form and we had a good laugh, good reminisce.”

The song, according to lyrics shared with GQ, reflects on their shared past: “We had it / Pure magic / Remember what it was like / Time passes / So fast and / I couldn’t inform you goodbye.” Horan co-wrote the track with Julian Bunetta and John Ryan, both of whom had worked with One Direction during their early years.

Following Payne’s funeral, which was attended by Horan and other former One Direction members – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik – Horan retreated from public life. “I went into hiding a little bit,” he explained, needing time to process his grief. The period of mourning ultimately led to the creation of “End of an Era,” the twelfth and final track on “Dinner Party,” set for release on June 5.

Horan also reflected on cherished memories with Payne, extending beyond their time as global pop stars. He recalled “random nights playing FIFA on the bus” and the unique bond they formed during the bootcamp stage of “The X Factor,” where One Direction was initially assembled. “I just got to realize him a little bit and then we ended up doing what we did together,” Horan said. “Memories that only he and I can share ’cause you have a team and you have people around all the time, but we always said that only us have that experience, no one else has that.”
