Milan-San Remo 2024: Live Updates, Crashes & Race Highlights

A significant crash involving several riders marred the women’s Milan-San Remo race on Saturday, occurring during the descent of the Cipressa. The incident overshadowed the ongoing competition, with reports indicating multiple riders were affected, some even leaving the road and going over the guardrail.

The crash involved Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Léa Le Court, according to reports from Sporza. The severity of their injuries is currently unknown. The race continued despite the incident, with the remaining riders proceeding towards the Poggio, the final challenging climb before the finish in Sanremo.

Prior to the crash, Lieke Nooijen had launched a solo attack on the Cipressa, gaining a lead over the peloton. According to Blasting News Italia, Nooijen held a 15-second advantage as she approached the base of the Poggio. However, Nikola Noskova subsequently caught Nooijen, with the pair briefly leading before being absorbed by the main group.

The peloton, including key contenders such as Lorena Wiebes, the defending champion, and Lotte Kopecky, were closely monitoring the situation. Cyclingnews.com reported that Wiebes was positioned well on Kopecky’s wheel as the pace increased, while Lidl-Trek led the chase to close the gap on Noskova, and Nooijen.

The race began in Genoa, covering a distance of 156 kilometers. As of 13:17 CET, riders were approaching the steepest section of the Poggio, with the pace intensifying. The incident on the Cipressa has undoubtedly altered the dynamics of the race, leaving the outcome uncertain as the remaining riders tackle the final kilometers.
