“All the Empty Rooms,” a documentary focusing on the bedrooms of children lost to gun violence, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The film, which eschews typical coverage of mass shootings to instead center on the lasting impact on families, has garnered significant attention within the medical community for its public health implications.
Dr. Chethan Sathya, a pediatric trauma surgeon and director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention at Northwell Health, served as a consulting producer on the project. He became involved after treating a child connected to the filmmaker and subsequently assisted with fact-checking and shaping the film’s message, according to the American Medical Association.
“These families, from different parts of the country, never thought this was going to happen to their child. And when it affects them, all that’s left behind is this empty room,” Dr. Sathya said, as reported by the AMA. He also emphasized the film’s potential to move beyond normalization and toward prevention, connecting the personal stories to broader injury and violence prevention efforts within healthcare.
The documentary features the rooms of Alyssa Alhadeff, Charlotte Bacon, Dominic Blackwell, Jackie Cazares, Luke Hoyer, Gracie Muehlberger, Carmen Schentrup, and Hallie Scruggs, children killed in shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Sandy Hook Elementary School, Saugus High School, Robb Elementary School, and the Covenant School. The film’s creators, Steve Hartman and Lou Bopp, spent seven years documenting these spaces, aiming to reveal the realities of grief and loss experienced by families.
The American Medical Association highlighted the film’s win on social media, applauding its focus on firearm injury prevention. Northwell Health’s work to reduce firearm injury as a public health issue mirrors the film’s central theme of honoring families by preventing future tragedies. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
Dr. Sathya indicated his willingness to facilitate screenings of “All the Empty Rooms” at hospitals and universities, seeking to broaden the film’s reach and spark further discussion about gun violence prevention. The film was nominated for the Academy Award alongside other documentaries addressing critical social issues.
