A tribute concert celebrating the life and music of Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the influential bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, will take place at Diecast in Manchester on May 30th. The event, dubbed ‘Manichester’, aims to honour Mounfield’s legacy and raise funds for his two sons, Gene and George, aged 12.
Mounfield died on November 20, 2025, at the age of 63, following a period of respiratory issues, according to reports. His passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians and fans, including Liam Gallagher, Paul Weller, and Ian Brown, who attended his funeral at Manchester Cathedral in December.
The concert is being organised by Damon Minchella, former bassist for Ocean Colour Scene. Minchella recounted a recent experience performing a tribute to Mani during a concert with Richard Ashcroft in São Paulo, Brazil, where a bassline medley of The Stone Roses’ “She Bangs the Drums” and The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” elicited a massive reaction from the 80,000-strong crowd. “That’s the power and legacy of Mani,” he told the Manchester Evening News.
The lineup for ‘Manichester’ includes Cast, Peter Hook and The Kowloons, and a specially assembled band featuring musicians with close ties to Mounfield. Aziz Ibrahim, guitarist for The Stone Roses, will perform alongside Rowetta, formerly of Happy Mondays, Simone Butler, ex-Primal Scream member, and Mick Rossi of Slaughter and the Dogs.
Further additions to the lineup include Dave McCabe from The Zutons, Baz Fratelli from The Fratellis, Zak Starkey of Mantra of the Cosmos, drummer Steve White, and Jon McClure from Reverend and the Makers. The event is being held in association with Madchester.com and fashion label GIOGOI, and has received the full support of Mounfield’s family.
Greg Mounfield, Mani’s younger brother, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “I think it will be brilliant. With the names already involved, and more to come, I know he’d have been absolutely buzzing about it.”
In addition to the concert, a crowdfunder has been launched to create a permanent tribute mural in Failsworth, North Manchester, where Mounfield grew up. Details of the crowdfunder were not immediately available.
Tickets for ‘Manichester’ will go on sale on Friday, March 27.
