England manager Thomas Tuchel has recalled defender Harry Maguire to his squad for upcoming friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan, the Football Association announced Friday. The 35-player roster signals preparations for this year’s FIFA World Cup tournament.
Maguire, who has earned 64 international caps, last appeared for England in 2024 and was absent from the UEFA European Championship 2024, where England finished as runners-up. His return to the national team comes after a period of consistent performance with Manchester United, alongside teammate Kobie Mainoo, according to the FA.
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham as well returns to the squad after a recent absence due to a hamstring injury. However, defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was not included in the selection.
England will first face Uruguay at Wembley Stadium on March 27, followed by a match against Japan at the same venue four days later. Tuchel’s side will play two additional friendly matches against Fresh Zealand and Costa Rica in June as part of their World Cup preparations.
England has been drawn into a World Cup group alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. Their opening match of the tournament is scheduled for June 17 against Croatia in Dallas.
