Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) units are conducting military exercises across several municipalities this week, including Vecsaules parish, Bauskas novads, Ropažu novads, and Jēkabpils novads, according to reports from Latvian media outlets.
Exercises in Vecsaules parish involve Zemessardze, the primary instrument for public involvement in national defense, according to a report by ReTV. In Bauskas novads, exercises are being conducted by soldiers of the Vidzeme Operational Direction (VAD), with local residents advised not to be alarmed by increased military activity, as reported by Delfi. Zemessardze units are also engaged in tactical exercises in Ropažu novads, according to TVNET. Further east, military exercises are underway in Jēkabpils novads, as reported by Radio1.lv. The 52nd Combat Support Battalion of Zemessardze is conducting exercises in Jelgavas novads, as announced by the National Armed Forces.
The exercises encompass a range of activities designed to enhance combat readiness and interoperability. The NBS, as outlined in the National Armed Forces Law, is comprised of regular forces, Zemessardze, and the National Armed Forces reserve. According to the Ministry of Defence, the NBS’s primary mission is to defend Latvia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, democratic constitutional order, and citizens’ freedoms.
Zemessardze, the largest and most geographically representative structure within the NBS, offers citizens the opportunity to voluntarily serve their country, contributing to its defense. Individuals can serve through an 11-month service commitment, a five-year commitment, or a reserve officer program for higher education students. The organization is also exploring the creation of a “Zemessardze supporter” program, allowing civilians to contribute their skills and expertise to the defense sector, pending legislative changes.
Latvia is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), described by the NBS as “the world’s strongest military alliance.” In February 2026, the NBS announced NATO Force Integration Unit would conduct “Moving Venue 26” exercises. The Defence Minister also discussed securing the delivery of anti-ship missile systems to Latvia during a meeting in Oslo on March 20, 2026. Exercises “Solar Eclipse 2026” are also planned to improve combat support capabilities.
