Kazakhstan: 4-Year-Old Dies During Dental Work – Anesthesia & Negligence Probe

A four-year-old girl died in a dental clinic in Kazakhstan after undergoing a procedure involving 18 teeth, despite an initial agreement with her parents to treat a maximum of eleven, according to reports surfacing this week.

The incident, which occurred in October 2024 at a private dental clinic near Astana, the nation’s capital, has sparked outrage and a formal investigation into potential medical negligence. Authorities are reviewing security camera footage from the clinic, which reportedly shows medical staff attempting resuscitation efforts after the girl went into cardiac arrest and failed to regain consciousness following the anesthesia.

According to reports from Kazakh media outlets, the girl was placed under general anesthesia for the extensive dental work. During the procedure, doctors administered additional doses of anesthesia due to its length, which investigators believe contributed to her respiratory failure. The footage shows the parents bringing the child into the clinic and leaving her in the care of the dental professionals.

Initial findings from the forensic examination revealed the child had pre-existing conditions – bronconeumonía and amigdalitis – that may have been contraindications for general anesthesia. The prosecution alleges an improper dosage of adrenaline was administered during the resuscitation attempt.

The case resurfaced in early December 2025 as authorities revealed the security camera footage during the initial court hearing against the clinic. The investigation is focused on determining responsibility between the dentist and the anesthesiologist involved in the procedure.

The incident has drawn international attention, with social media users sharing the security camera footage and expressing condemnation. Kazakh authorities have stated they are treating the case with the utmost seriousness and will pursue all available legal avenues to determine accountability.
