Jaén marked the tenth anniversary of its Provincial Day on Wednesday with a flag-raising ceremony and the launch of the Feria de los Pueblos, an event intended to showcase the region’s economic, cultural, and tourism potential. The celebrations, inaugurated in 2013 to coincide with the bicentennial of the Provincial Council, underscore a growing sense of regional identity, according to officials.
The flag-raising took place at the Centro de Interpretación Turística ‘Jaén, Paraíso Interior’ and was accompanied by the provincial anthem, inspired by Miguel Hernández’s poem ‘Aceituneros,’ a gesture intended to connect the region’s history and culture. Paco Reyes, President of the Provincial Council, used the occasion to call on citizens to “continue deepening the feeling of identity of the province,” according to a statement released by the Diputación de Jaén.
This year’s celebrations culminate in the Premios de la Provincia awards gala and the Feria de los Pueblos 2026, held at the IFEJA exhibition center. Reyes emphasized the importance of municipal involvement in both events, highlighting the role of local governments in promoting Jaén’s image and opportunities. He stated that Jaén “has a potential that we have begun to believe in,” according to reports from La Ventana Andalucía.
The Feria de los Pueblos aims to display the diversity of Jaén’s municipalities, alongside contributions from the University of Jaén and local businesses. The event is intended to position Jaén as a leading destination for interior tourism within Spain. This year’s award recipients include Judge Baltasar Garzón, writer Fanny Rubio, the Macrosad company, and the Unicaja Jaén Paraíso Interior Athletics Club.
The Provincial Day celebrations began with an exhibition of unreleased Spanish cinema in Jaén, running from February 21st to March 4th, and a tribute to donors of the Instituto de Estudios Giennenses on March 9th. The Diputación de Jaén initiated the annual commemoration in March 2022, linking the date to the approval of the 1812 Constitution and the creation of provincial councils.
