The body of James Gracey, a University of Alabama student from Elmhurst, Illinois, has been recovered in the sea near Barcelona, Spain, authorities confirmed Friday. The 20-year-old had been missing since early Tuesday morning after last being seen with friends leaving a nightclub, according to multiple news reports.
Spanish authorities located Gracey’s body in the water off a Barcelona beach, in the vicinity of where he was last seen, CBS News reported. Gracey had been traveling in Barcelona with classmates during a spring break trip and failed to return to his lodging after a night out.
The circumstances surrounding Gracey’s death are currently under investigation. Police have not released details regarding the cause of death, according to reports from ABC7 Chicago and the Chicago Tribune.
Gracey was a student at the University of Alabama, though he hailed from Elmhurst, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. WTTW News reported that a search had been underway for Gracey since he was reported missing earlier this week.
The discovery of Gracey’s body brings an end to the search efforts, but the investigation into the events leading to his death remains ongoing.
