IGSS Provides Renal Health Day for Colombina Workers in Escuintla

More than 100 employees of the Colombina company in Escuintla, Guatemala, received preventative medical care during a recent health outreach event focused on kidney health, the Instituto Guatemalteco de Seguridad Social (IGSS) announced.

IGSS personnel conducted kidney screenings and vital sign checks for Colombina workers directly at their workplace. The screenings included tests for serum creatinine, uric acid, and random urine microalbumin, according to a statement released by the IGSS. Medical consultations were also provided to those requiring further evaluation, with the aim of promoting early detection of kidney conditions.

Gabriel Caal, a Colombina employee who participated in the event, emphasized the importance of timely detection of kidney disease for both personal and family well-being. María José Barrios, head of preventative medicine at Colombina, stated that these health days allow for evaluation of employee health and strengthening of preventative measures. Mynor Hernández, the company’s quality manager, expressed gratitude to the IGSS for bringing medical attention directly to the staff.

Dr. Franco Marcenaro, director of the IGSS Hospital of Escuintla, underscored the critical role of early detection in preventing kidney disease. He noted that this is the third consecutive year the IGSS has held such a jornada, or health day, at Colombina, reinforcing preventative actions and employee health care. The IGSS Hospital of Escuintla can be reached at 7889-6693 or 7889-6694, according to the IGSS directory.

The IGSS, Guatemala’s social security institute, also recently conducted a broader Jornada de Seguridad Social in Magdalena, Escuintla in January 2026, according to a post on the IGSS official Facebook page. In March 2025, the Hospital de Escuintla held a kidney health day as part of World Kidney Day celebrations, offering workshops on the topic.
