A loud boom startled residents in central Dunedin this morning as a Toyota Corolla hybrid vehicle experienced what authorities are investigating as a potential battery issue. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) responded to the incident at the intersection of Princes St and Moray Place at approximately 10:18 a.m. Local time.
Senior firefighter Mike Taylor of FENZ described the incident as an “explosion,” though the exact cause remains under investigation. “It looked as though it could have potentially been an issue with the battery in the vehicle,” Taylor stated, adding that the unpredictable nature of high-voltage batteries necessitates a careful assessment of the scene.
Firefighters secured the area and subsequently removed the vehicle. The incident occurred amidst a separate, unrelated traffic incident in the wider Otago region, with a motorcyclist reported to be seriously injured in Waikouaiti, according to reports from the Otago Daily Times.
The Dunedin incident raises questions about the safety protocols surrounding hybrid and electric vehicle batteries, though FENZ has not yet released any preliminary findings regarding the cause of the event. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as they become available.
