Poland to Double Deposit Return on Select Packaging This October
Warsaw, Poland - polish consumers will soon receive double compensation for returning deposit-covered packaging at participating retailers, starting in October. The initiative, announced by Żabka food quality director Joanna Kasowska, combines the standard deposit refund with additional points awarded through the Żappka loyalty application. This move aims to incentivize recycling and demonstrate corporate obligation towards environmental impact.
The expanded deposit return system initially includes major retailers such as Auchan, Daisy, Aldi, and Kaufland, with smaller stores also able to voluntarily participate. While not legally mandated, the program reflects a growing commitment from businesses to address packaging waste. Kasowska explained, “Although we are not legally obliged to participate in the bail system, we feel responsible for the impact of our activities on the habitat (…). From October, in the case of packaging covered by the deposit, the customer will gain double – Return of the deposit and Żappa. We will continue to grant points in the Żappka application for the remaining bottles and cans.”
The system applies to packaging covered by a deposit, offering a financial incentive for consumers to recycle. Agnieszka Maciuła-Ziomek reported on the initiative, noting the broader trend of sustainable practices gaining traction in Poland, exemplified by the rising popularity of trends like matcha – a practice originating in Japan – and a growing global focus on environmental responsibility.
