Healthier Instant Noodles: Expert Tips & Tricks

Australians are increasingly seeking ways to boost the nutritional value of instant noodles, a staple convenience food, according to food experts. While inexpensive and quick to prepare, instant noodles are often criticised for their low nutritional content. Experts recommend simple additions to improve both the health benefits and the overall dining experience.

A key recommendation is the inclusion of vegetables. Frozen peas, spinach, broccoli, and carrots are easily added during the cooking process, increasing fibre, vitamin intake, and textural complexity. Protein sources, such as boiled or fried eggs, tofu cubes, edamame beans, shredded chicken, or tinned beans, are also suggested to enhance the meal’s satiety and nutritional profile.

Addressing concerns about high sodium levels, experts advise using only half, or less, of the provided flavour sachet. Alternatively, consumers can enhance flavour with low-sodium stock, garlic, ginger, herbs, or chilli, offering a healthier and more customisable taste experience.

Recent data indicates that Indomie and Trident are currently the most popular instant noodle brands in Australia, both receiving a five-star rating for overall satisfaction in a recent survey conducted by Canstar Blue. Indomie was specifically praised for its taste, while Trident earned recognition for its variety. This follows a 2024 win for Aldi’s Simplee brand, which was lauded for its value for money and packaging.

The Canstar Blue survey also revealed that consumers often favour packet noodles over cup varieties, citing better value for money. However, 43 per cent of respondents indicated a preference for purchasing instant noodles in cup form. Nongshim received the highest rating for texture and consistency, while Maggi consistently earned four stars across all categories. Suimin achieved five-star ratings for texture, packaging, and variety, and Mama noodles ranked seventh, followed by Coles and Woolworths home brands, with Fantastic placing last in the rankings.

The Australian Food Shop currently offers a range of Maggi 2 Minute Noodles, including chicken, beef, and wholegrain options, alongside Indomie Mi Goreng fried noodles in both packet and cup formats. Some Maggi products are currently on sale, with discounts of up to 50 per cent.
