An Iranian attack targeting Israel’s Haifa oil refinery caused damage to critical infrastructure, the Israeli Oil Refineries company confirmed Friday. The attack, which occurred Thursday, prompted a visible plume of smoke over the facility, but authorities reported no immediate concerns regarding hazardous material leaks.
The company, specializing in oil refining and petrochemicals, stated that the damaged infrastructure is owned by a third party, but did not disclose the owner’s identity. A statement released to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange indicated that operations are expected to resume within days.
Israeli media reports on Thursday initially indicated the damage was caused by Iranian missiles. Sky News Arabia likewise reported on the attack, citing an Israeli statement. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the company acknowledged the impact on vital infrastructure.
Alongside the attack on the Haifa refinery, reports emerged of significant damage to container storage areas at the Port of Haifa, also attributed to the Iranian missile strikes. Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported ongoing fires at the port’s container complex, with material losses estimated in the millions.
The Israeli Oil Refineries company’s statement, published on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, did not detail the nature of the damage beyond stating it affected “critical infrastructure.”
