Bulgaria is poised to join the growing number of European nations with access to Google Shopping, with a planned launch in October, according to notifications sent to Bulgarian merchants. The move is expected to significantly reshape the country’s e-commerce landscape, currently valued at approximately €2.7 billion annually.
Google Shopping transforms product discovery into a visually-driven process, leveraging artificial intelligence to present users with images, descriptions, prices, vendor information, reviews, and shipping details in a consolidated format. The platform allows for immediate price comparisons, though purchases will initially continue to be processed directly through the retailer’s website.
The introduction of Google Shopping will offer two avenues for product placement: paid listings, where advertisers bid for top positions, and free listings, appearing lower on the search results page. The system operates through a direct data exchange between Google and participating merchants.
“A large portion of advertising budgets on other markets are directed to this channel because it is also preferred by consumers,” said Kristian Velev of the digital agency DigiMentals, as reported by Money.bg. He cautioned that businesses unprepared for the shift could face reduced visibility. “Quite a few sites with quality organic positioning will lose visibility if they don’t adapt quickly enough. Search results will now be richer in different options – this is a plus for consumers, but a minus for businesses that are not positioned [for it].”
Google Shopping has been available in over 120 countries and is already operational in neighboring Greece and Romania. The platform’s expansion into Bulgaria coincides with the country’s anticipated adoption of the Euro, and is strategically timed to precede the peak shopping season surrounding Black Friday and the Christmas holidays. According to Velev, local support for Bulgarian merchants will likely be based in Greece and Romania, which will be advantageous given the unique characteristics of the Bulgarian e-commerce market, such as the prevalence of cash-on-delivery payments.
The arrival of Google Shopping in Bulgaria follows a 2023 antitrust ruling by the European Union, which imposed a fine exceeding €2 billion on Google for abusing its dominant market position. The EU determined that Google had unfairly favored its own comparison shopping service.
