Wallis Entertainment has secured a last-minute deal to take over the Glenelg Cinema, preventing its closure just days after Event Cinemas announced it would cease operations at the seaside location. The South Australian family-owned company will reopen the six-screen cinema on Jetty Road on March 27, according to a statement released today.
Event Cinemas confirmed last week that it would shut down the Glenelg complex after a decade of operation, prompting concerns for the future of the popular entertainment venue. Wallis Entertainment’s intervention ensures the cinema will remain a fixture in the Glenelg community.
“Glenelg has always held a special place in our hearts,” said Deanna Wallis, Director of Wallis Entertainment. “This is a real good-news moment for Glenelg; maintaining its shared place where families, friends and the community come together,” she added. Wallis emphasized the company’s commitment to keeping the cinema operational for the long term, stating, “Our priority is simple: preserve the doors open, keep the screens on, and keep cinema in Glenelg.”
The transition will be closely coordinated with landlord Andrew Taplin and the Taplin Group, who own the property. Wallis Entertainment expressed its satisfaction with the collaboration, noting the importance of securing the cinema’s future with the support of the property owners.
The takeover marks a return to Glenelg for Wallis Entertainment, a South Australian cinema and hospitality chain. The company intends to focus on continuity and customer experience as it integrates the Glenelg Cinema into its existing network. The move has been welcomed by local residents and moviegoers who frequent the Jetty Road precinct.
