Functional & Calm: A Family Home Designed for Daily Life | Interior Design Ideas

A Singaporean home has been designed with a focus on practicality and longevity, eschewing showroom aesthetics for a lived-in feel, according to designer Lim.

The project centered on creating a functional space tailored to the homeowner, Yvonne Koh’s, lifestyle while maintaining a sense of calm and comfort. Every design choice was driven by the needs of daily life, with the goal of achieving a timeless and easily maintained home. Custom carpentry was integral to maximizing storage solutions throughout the residence.

Durability was a key consideration in material selection. High-quality laminates were chosen for their lasting performance, while sintered surfaces were implemented in the kitchen and bathrooms for their resistance to wear and ease of cleaning. A warm neutral color palette forms the foundation of the interior design, layered with carefully planned lighting to foster a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

To maintain clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, traditional wall-mounted light switches were eliminated. Instead, lighting is controlled remotely via smartphone or portable controls. This approach contributes to the uncluttered design and enhances the home’s modern sensibility.

Yvonne Koh is the Founder and Managing Director of Saeloun Asia, advising C-Suites and business leaders on corporate reputation and crisis communications, with a focus on geopolitical trends, according to her LinkedIn profile. She is also identified on Instagram as a “Mom Boss and Twin Tween Mom” prioritizing intentional living.

Lim expressed satisfaction with the final outcome, emphasizing that the home was not intended to resemble a display space but rather a genuine family environment. “It is lived-in and full of life,” he said.
