A newly installed laparoscopic surgical tower at Hospital I Albrecht in Trujillo, Peru, is poised to significantly reduce wait times for complex surgeries, with a goal of completing 50 procedures before the end of April. The initiative, spearheaded by the EsSalud health insurance system, aims to provide insured patients with access to surgery meeting international safety standards.
The state-of-the-art tower utilizes minimally invasive techniques, employing a small camera and specialized instruments inserted through tiny incisions, according to Dr. Sandra Mori Díaz, head of the hospital’s Medical-Surgical Department. “Laparoscopy not only improves the surgeon’s precision thanks to high-definition vision, but radically transforms the post-operative experience,” she stated.
Dr. Mori Díaz explained that the minimally invasive approach results in less post-operative pain, a reduced risk of infection, and a faster recovery time, allowing patients to return to their daily activities more quickly. Previously, open surgeries required several days of hospitalization and weeks of recovery. The new technology allows for quicker patient discharge and increased surgical capacity.
The acquisition of the laparoscopic tower was made possible through a donation from the Private Antenor Orrego University (UPAO), secured through the efforts of Dr. Claudia Holguín Armas, manager of the EsSalud La Libertad Regional Network. This collaboration strengthens the relationship between academia and the healthcare sector, bringing advanced technology directly to patients.
“Our priority is the insured patient,” Dr. Holguín Armas emphasized. “With this equipment, care at EsSalud La Libertad improves tangibly. We are scheduled to complete 50 operations before May. We are equipping our doctors with the best tools to make the service efficient, modern, and, above all, humane.”
The hospital plans to utilize the tower for a range of procedures beyond cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal), including treatments for abdominal pathologies, hernias, and gynecological procedures. The high-resolution imaging offered by the equipment minimizes the risk of bleeding and complications, according to hospital officials.
Hospital I Albrecht, an important EsSalud facility, provides a range of medical services and is located at Residencial Albrecht S.N. In Trujillo, with contact numbers 22 4048 and 22 4029, as well as EsSalud En Línea at (044) 485030. The hospital is part of the La Libertad Regional Network, with a central contact at 044-480860, according to information from the National Data Platform.
Dr. Holguín Armas stated that the advancement positions the hospital as a regional leader in efficiency, demonstrating the effectiveness of inter-institutional collaboration in addressing gaps in Peruvian public health. As of January 20, 2025, EsSalud President Dr. María Elena Aguilar Del Águila visited the hospital to oversee operations following an incident at a nearby public entity, confirming that all medical services were continuing without interruption.
